Captain America is suited up and really to rumble again with enemies that might be too close to home in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Check Kidzworld’s review of the action-packed new movie!

By: Lynn Barker

As if it isn’t hard enough for Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) to “wake up” in our far future, try to forget his past love and fit in, he also discovers enemies inside the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization for which he works. Who the heck does he trust?

Trying to Adjust

After beating the evil Hydra organization way back during WWII, being frozen in ice and waking up 70 years later to join the Avengers and fight an alien attack, Steve Rogers is now an operative for the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization working alongside hot Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow who tells him that he should not trust S.H.I.E.L.D. She also tells him he needs to get a date and live a little! He’s still trying to adjust to life in the 21st century. Steve meets war vet and PTSD counsellor Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) while on a jog in the park and the guys hit it off.

S.H.I.E.L.D.’s New Project

Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) tells Steve about Operation Insight, cool new helicarriers with advanced weaponry linked to spy satellites, hopefully to stop bad guys before they do too much damage. Fury wants the latest info on Operation Insight but is ambushed and badly injured on the way to get it by a baddie called The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Escaping to Steve’s apartment, Fury hands him a flash drive and later appears to die on the operating table.

Summoned by the Boss

Senior political official for S.H.I.E.L.D  Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) calls Steve in but he won’t turn over the flash drive. Pierce sends agency toughies after rebellious Steve to get the info. Together Natasha and Steve use flash drive info to find an old base and information that the Hydra organization worked secretly within S.H.l.E.L.D. in the past and does even now. Hydra wants to use the new helicarriers to kill selected enemies. A S.H.I.E.L.D. missile destroys the bunker Steve and Natasha are in but they escape.

Gathering the Good Guys

Natasha and Steve enlist the help of Wilson and his cool “Falcon” device that lets him fly into battle.  After escaping more S.H.I.E.L.D. baddies, they discover that Nick Fury is alive and planning a mission to stop Pierce (secret baddie) from launching Operation Insight.

Showdown

To stop the launch of the helicarriers with satellite control, knowing they will target innocent people, Captain America, Falcon and Black Widow must replace the controller chips inside each helicarrier to override that satellite control. Of course, standing in the way is Hydra’s operative The Winter Soldier whom Steve recognizes as his dear old pal Bucky Barnes, presumed dead. Can Steve wake up the humanity inside his old friend? Even if they are successful, Nick Fury must go undercover and S.H.I.E.L.D. will never be the hero organization they all thought it was.

Stay around through the credits for two cool preview scenes that set up the next “Cappy” movie. A Hydra baddie holds Loki’s scepter and watches two prisoners in cells; one with superhuman speed and the other, telekinetic powers.. Then after more credits Bucky Barnes, still Winter Soldier, face covered in a hooded sweatshirt, visits the Smithsonian checking out an exhibit showing him fighting alongside Captain America. Will he remember his old friend?

Wrapping Up

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is very entertaining, I’d say for all ages. The story’s political intrigue offers some suspense and surprises making the tale more complicated than a lot of superhero faire before it. Whether you “get” all the twists and turns or not, if you are just at the Cineplex for some great popcorn-munching action and cool special effects, you’ll be entertained as well. Also, Scarlett is one hot chick in spandex and Chris Evans is quite hunky as well so there is some eye candy for you, your besties and your date.

Exchanges between Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character Natasha and Steve Rogers (Captain America) are witty, fun and flirty and the I-love-ya-bro chatter exchanged between Cappy and new pal Sam Wilson aka Falcon (played winningly by Anthony Mackie) is fun and uplifting. Robert Redford is great as a mysterious political figure that might not be all he’s cracked up to be. And the great Samuel L. Jackson really shines with more to do in this film as S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury. Sebastian Stan as Steve’s old buddy Bucky Barnes turned against his will into killer machine The Winter Soldier does a convincing job as a manufactured bad guy trying to remember his past while beating up his former best friend.

If you can, stay through the end credits for the two “preview” scenes of what is next in the Cappy universe. Although the story might be a little too full of plot twists and turns for younger kids, all ages will enjoy the action, effects and friendly banter among the good guys. We go four stars.
